- Pretty Boxy MetroidVania -

As you teleport to a strange, plant based planet something goes wrong and you lose all your equipment. Find your weapons again and collect upgrade crystals hidden in the world to upgrade them to peak performance. Currently, there are two planets visitable, and a "hub ship" available from which you can travel to planets and upgrade your weapons. Can you find all 6 weapons and fully upgrade them? Hope you have fun!

My first 2D game and second "short game" project, implemented in unity.

- Gameplay -

Pretty straightforward metroidvania with shooting elements. Explore planets and find hidden upgrade crystals to improve your weapons.

There are many different enemies to encounter and 6 weapons to find. Originally, 4 worlds were planet, which is why the second planet features a lot more weapons than the first. But due to time constraints with the "one game a month" approach those did not make it into this version. But they might be added at a later point still, as some mechanics were already implemented but are currently unused :)

- Controls -

WASD to move

MOUSE to move cursor

LEFT MOUSE to shoot weapon (once obtained)

SPACE to jump

SHIFT to dash (once obtained)

NUMBER KEYS to switch weapons

ESCAPE to pause game

R to reset to last checkpoint

Really nice game, jsut a bit short, hopefully we may see a sequel or something at some point :-)

So after seeing your snowman / tower defense game you made during the Great Winter Game Jam, I followed you and I saw you had made this game. I don't know if I'm the one to give you advice, seeing how I've never made a "short game" as you call it, but I have some minor problems with how the game works, and feels.

Firstly, this game has no theme. As far as I can tell without you saying that this is a metroidvania, this is a 2d shooter game. But it just doesn't feel right.

1. The movement is WAY too slow for a combat game.

2. When you hit an enemy, there is no response, you just see a particle effect which is really unsatisfying if this game is built for combat.

Also, there are some glitches that I ran into. The platformer script that is used does not update often enough to get you above the ground if you fall at high velocity. On level 1, on  the starting fall, if you fall the full distance (maybe jump up idk) you will end up clipping through the ground and being stuck there forever.

Some ideas to make this game better:

Why press "E" to set your spawn point? Why doesn't it do it automatically?

Why have a respawning cooldown in a singleplayer game? Maybe just make an animation.

The ammo / reloading system feels kind of weird. If you've ever played Enter the Gungeon, maybe something like that would be better.

And last of all, no one likes to get a mostly negative comment on a game that they worked really hard on. So here are the things that I enjoyed about this game:

-The enemy art looks really cool

-The hub space station looks really cool

-The music is really fitting

-The UI is really polished

-The sfx is nice

Overall, I believe that with some changes, and patches, this could become a legitimately fun game.

Thanks for trying the game and taking the time to write a bunch of feedback, means a lot :)

Regarding your movement speed, you might be encountering a bug related to the framerate there, as another commenter mentioned a similar thing, but in reverse. I have not yet had the time to check this myself on another machine, but I will upload a patch once that is fixed. As a reference, you should be able to jump about 9 or 10 squares if there is no problem with the movement speed.

Pressing e to set the spawnpoint was a design decision to be able to choose the spawnpoint yourself, more useful later on when searching for secrets ;)

Thanks again for the constructive criticism, I will take it into account when creating the patch.

Have a great day!

nice game, I just cant complete the second level. not cause it is hard, but cause between start and finish I always manage to get stuck in a wall somewhere when i have enough momentum.

would be really nice if the game had some suicide button, which you could pres in such a case.
like pressing "R" sending you bac to the last checkpoint.

without it, I can only quit the level, lose all the progresss so far made in the level, including all the powerups of said level (namely the double jump upgrade. weirdly enough, the dash is kept despite quitting)

(+1)

Hey, thanks for checking out the game! :)

Glitching into the wall sounds like a bug tied to the framerate (should not happen, but might). Sry for that, I only had my system to tests the game for now.

Not saving the jump upgrade was an oversight, I just uploaded a fix version, if you want to try it out again. I also added the reset button (r key), good suggestion!

Sry for the issues, thanks again for playing :)
